Here, we’ll take a look at exactly why sustainable farming is such an important part of respecting the Earth—and how the cannabis industry is moving toward embracing sustainability to give back to our planet.

Earth Day and Sustainability

When we think about all that the Earth does for us, it’s easy to see why it’s so important that we treat our planet with love and respect. From providing us with food we need to plants that we use as medicine to giving us clean water to drink, there’s no way we can ever repay the Earth for all the ways it supports life.

That being said, practicing sustainability is a way that we can at least start the process of treating the Earth well, while also preserving all that our planet has to offer for generations to come. Sustainability works to maintain a balance with the Earth. Many industries—including farming and agriculture—need to take pointed steps to make sure that the work they’re doing isn’t taking more from the environment than can be replenished.

Cannabis Farming and the Environment

Cannabis requires a lot of the environment, and it can be hard for cannabis farmers to make sure they’re running a sustainable operation. Researchers are hard at work to fully understand the best ways to replenish the Earth after cannabis farming.

A single cannabis plant needs about six gallons of water per day during the growing season. It’s easy to imagine how quickly that amount of water adds up on a farm that’s growing several hundred—or several thousand—cannabis plants.

Indoor cannabis grow houses contribute to greenhouse gas emissions due to the energy required to heat, cool, ventilate, and light the greenhouse. While growing cannabis outdoors is often a more sustainable option than running an indoor growhouse, doing so can also deplete soil and cause erosion.

Thankfully, those in the world of cannabis appreciate all that the Earth gives us and are constantly working to develop new methods that allow the Earth to flourish.

Sustainable Cannabis Production

Thankfully, there are many ways that cannabis farms can reduce the impact their growth operation has on the environment. Sustainable cannabis farming practices include:

  • Growing outdoors when possible. While there can still be negative effects on the environment in outdoor growing operations, the impact is far less than that of plants grow indoors. Growing plants outdoors removes the need for ventilation, heating, cooling, and lighting.
  • Rotating crops. Different plants take different nutrients from soil, and rotating plants regularly can help to ensure that the soil has plenty of nutrients. Failing to rotate crops can result in nutrient-deprived soil, which can harm the ecological health of the grow area and can result in a poor crop yield.
  • Composting. Waste is an unfortunate byproduct of most agricultural industries, but creating an on-site compost pile can both help you cut down on waste and allow you to return vital nutrients to the soil.

Choosing Sustainable Cannabis Farmers

Doing your research is key when it comes to choosing a sustainable cannabis brand. Most cannabis brands include information about their grow operation on their website. At Solar Cannabis Co., we appreciate your commitment to choosing brands that give back and take care of our planet, and we’re happy to help you find the cannabis brands that mesh with your environmental values.
