What is 4/20?

The term 420 is believed to have originated out of California during the early 1970s. In San Rafael, a group of teens called the “Waldos” used the 420 phrase as a secret code to discuss pot. They initially came up with the number because they would meet after school at 4:20 to search for an abandoned weed crop. Although the rumor is the teens never did find the secret crop in the woods, they did keep using the phrase to let each other know when they wanted to smoke pot together. The story was reported in a 1990s “High Times” article and is the most widely accepted 420 origin story.

The 420 term spread once one of the Waldos joined the band the Grateful Dead as a roadie for Phil Lesh. At concerts, fans would pass flyers inviting others to meet at “4:20 for 4-20ing.” April 20th became the official date to celebrate, and activities to honor cannabis were planned around the country. Movie theaters started playing marathons of popular pot movies such as “Up in Smoke” and “Reefer Madness.” Groups would also gather in places like Golden Gate Park to eat, dance, and smoke.

Along with fun on April 20th, the date also became a time that advocacy groups used to bring attention to the need to make cannabis legal for adults. Protests would be held on the date, and people would smoke pot in public as a form of civil disobedience. Over the years, the efforts of these groups helped legalize recreational marijuana in many states. However, there are still states that have strict laws against cannabis usage. Further efforts are needed to decriminalize weed at the federal level.
